American Indian casinos are big business in the United States, with an estimated 280,000 people employed across more than 400 sites.
That huge workforce is largely unorganized. Only a few such casinos recognize union contracts. Among them is North America’s largest gaming center, Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut.
In response to the steward’s statement that management often retaliates against workers who ask questions during meetings, the foreman forcefully pointed his finger in the steward’s face and said, “you’re dead!!” For emphasis, he said it twice.
It is an unfair labor practice to threaten stewards for acting on behalf of the membership and it is just plain wrong to use violent threats to threaten anyone in the workplace. Verizon management is creating a “hostile work environment” for its employees in the Lynn garage and elsewhere.
Members of the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 791 began picketing about a dozen Shaw’s and Star Market stores after union workers at a Shaw’s warehouse in Methuen went out on strike.
Peter Derouen, a spokesman for Easton-based Local 791, said his union’s members are urging shoppers to boycott stores where picket lines have been established.
Derouen said his union has set up picket lines in front of at least 11 stores in Greater Boston and southern New Hampshire, as well as the perishable goods warehouse in Methuen. The warehouse provides dairy items, meats and produce for Shaw’s and Star Market stores in New England.
Shaw’s Supermarket workers yesterday fanned out their protest to local grocery stores, a day after employees at a Methuen distribution center went on strike following the rejection of a final contract offer.
While 300 workers at the Shaw’s distribution center on Danton Drive remained on strike yesterday, it was unclear what the impact would be on shoppers.
The employees, members of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union, Local 791, ship thousands of pounds of produce from the facility daily to some 176 Shaw’s and Star Markets in New England.
March 8, 2010, is International Women’s Day, and this year the 20th Annual Women’s March in San Antonio on March 6 featured the struggle of women organizing at the San Antonio Grand Hyatt. This year, the Women’s Day March–a march of nearly 2,000 people–commenced in front of the Grand Hyatt because of how Hyatt treats women, especially its housekeeping workforce.
At the height of last year’s tourism season, the United Auto Workers trumpeted its support for casino dealers and lashed out at management for the lack of a first contract. The union’s frustration was splashed across highway billboards, in television and print ads, and was evident in Boardwalk rallies.
(NECN: Alysha Palumbo – Methuen, Mass.) – Walking instead of working. These Shaw’s Supermarkets employees felt they had no choice but to go on strike.
Shaw’s employee Sean Alaimo said, “What the company offered us is nowhere near fair, we’re just looking for fairness here.”
Union leaders involved in contract talks with Quincy-based Stop & Shop have issued 24-hour notices to end the current contract, which could trigger a strike if an agreement isn’t reached by noon today.
The main points of contention, according to United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1445 – one of five locals involved in the negotiations – are higher health insurance contributions and a lack of wage increases. The company also wants to reduce the pension for new full-time workers and reduce holidays for new part timers.
